Sometimes great design is the design that seems spontaneous. This is exactly the feeling that you get from villa Charlize, a blissful summer retreat occupying an isolated plot of land at the south-east part of the island, with two pristine beaches at walking distance.
The architect acknowledged the vernacular architecture and then took it up a notch, creating an organic structure that seems to grow out of the ground. Rather than trying to tame the landscape, he incorporated the rocks in his design, creating a cluster of interconnected recesses that feel like a natural continuation of one another. Then, he used decorative objects and nature to conjure a captivating synthesis of colours -vivid greens in window frames and trees, magnificent magentas in upholstery and flowers, cerulean blues in the sea and sky.
The result is a dreamy hacienda with a completely natural feel. Outdoors, the materials are natural -wood, stone and clay, the lounge and dining areas are shaded by bamboo pergolas and the 20m swimming pool is designed to resemble a pond. Indoors, cheerful colours, playful patterns and objects with personality create a laid-back ambience of informal luxury. Windows are strategically placed to connect the interior to the sea-views and bring the sunlight in. The rough-hewn furniture, the curving surfaces and the built-in sofas and beds reveal a meticulous attention to craftsmanship, complimented by casually placed art objects and antiques.
