But Mykonos is not just a party destination; it also has a rich history and culture. Delve into the island’s past by exploring the ancient ruins of Delos, a UNESCO World Heritage site, or visit the island’s charming churches and windmills. And of course, beach life! Q: Let’s give a head start with the 3 top beaches in Mykonos. Which are they?
A: If I were to choose only 3, I would go for Kalo Livadi, Elia, and Platys Gialos. Kalo Livadi is a favourite with tropical, turquoise waters and a relaxed atmosphere with multi-coloured umbrellas, fine blond sand, and shallow waters. Stretching out as one of the longest beaches on the island, it attracts visitors of all ages and boasts trendy beach clubs and bars with soft background music that, as evening falls, they become more and more vibrant. For an evening aperitif, Solymar is a great spot to unwind alongside the stunning views of this beautiful beach.
Elia offers a diverse and stunning landscape and, while its location may not be the most accessible, the tranquil coves and crystal-clear waters make it well worth the journey. Here you will be able to practice any type of watersports too. The palm-leaf umbrellas add an exotic touch while the small coves, a bit farther, offer tranquillity and privacy.
As for Platys Gialos, located in the southern part of the island, it provides a large sandy coast with crystal-clear waters and an array of recreational activities, including watersports, dining options, live music, and extended shores for relaxation. While jet-skiing and water-skiing appeal to thrill-seekers, leisurely lounging on deck chairs is available for all beachgoers.
Q: Good to know, thanks! Let’s talk about dining and the myriads of options we have on the island. Which are those one should definitely not miss?
A: Noema Restaurant captures the essence of Greek island life by inviting loved ones to gather around a table and indulge in the bold flavours of the Cycladic region. Situated in Mykonos, near the picturesque Panachra church, Noema embodies the generous spirit of the island, offering a culinary experience that reflects its vibrant culture. Another favourite is Spilia where you will immerse yourself in a truly romantic setting; a one-of-a-kind restaurant nestled within a cave overlooking Agia Anna beach, Spilia, with its warm and attentive service, provides an intimate atmosphere where you can savour local delicacies and seafood starring their renowned sea urchin and lobster pasta! A more cosmopolitan restaurant, Interni is a favourite among Mykonos’ elegant jet set, attracting discerning diners to its open courtyard adorned in glamorous all-white decor, surrounded by lush greenery. Featuring a trendy and vibrant ambiance here you will indulge in Mediterranean cuisine with modern twists varying from a refreshing avocado gazpacho to a tantalizing shrimp tempura and exquisite desserts. Just remember to make reservations during the summer months, as the atmosphere transforms into a festive celebration after midnight. And then we have COYA Mykonos! An open-air restaurant that takes inspiration from the vibrant flavours and colours of Peruvian and Latin American culture and offers a truly immersive dining experience. Embracing the fusion food heritage of Peru, their menu showcases freshly prepared, light, and healthy dishes that burst with natural flavours transporting you to a world where Incan heritage meets culinary excellence.
Q: Apart from beach life, dining and nightlife, what else can visitors enjoy here?
A: With its refreshing, safe waters, rich seabed and countless coasts, one can enjoy hours of snorkelling and exploring the fantastic world under the sea surface or head for an adrenaline rush with the countless watersports options offered. Of course, a boat tour or sailing trip is a must as it is the only way to visit amazing parts and coasts of the island, not reachable by land. For foodies, the cooking classes and wine tasting sessions are also a must as it is the only way to dive deep into the authentic Greek culinary tradition.
A not-to-miss site is the Municipal Art Gallery which hosts the permanent collection as well as temporary exhibitions of contemporary art, while party lovers will be thrilled to attend worldwide DJ sets throughout the island and during the entire season in countless beach bars and clubs on the island. And for those who are on the island during mid-September, the popular Harvest Festival is an event held at the Agricultural Museum when locals come together with their loved ones to celebrate the bountiful harvest by bringing a delightful assortment of food and wine and participating in activities such as baking bread in traditional ovens. The air is filled with the melodious tunes of bagpipes and ntoumpaki, inspiring everyone to dance and revel in the festivities.
Q: Mykonos is flooding with guests each year…what’s the best month to visit so that our guests enjoy the most authentic Mykonian experience?
A: I would definitely suggest June as Mykonos has a busy flow of visitors until late September. June is the best month to enjoy the pristine nature and get the best of the island’s hospitality when locals and businesses prepare to welcome the season with enthusiasm!
