Porto Heli is a quiet and tranquil destination that enjoys close proximity to Spetses island, a vibrant summer destination for Greeks and foreigners alike. As such and since every summer Spetses is the venue of some of the most popular events in Greece, visitors will have the chance to attend many of them in case they decide to leave the tranquillity of their summer resort.
The popular Spetses Classic Yacht Regatta has been organized since 2011 and dozens of classic and traditional boats participate in the race. One of the most important maritime events in the entire Mediterranean, this year it will take place 23-26/06/22. Another famous event is the Armata Festival that takes place in September each year and honours the contribution of Spetses to the 1821 Revolution. The event goes on for an entire week with cultural events for adults and children, and closes with a replica of a Turkish boat bursting into flames and fireworks.
Another favourite nearby destination, Hydra, is also the venue of some exciting events during summer. The Miaoulia Festival, honouring the Greek patriot Admiral Andreas Miaoulis, takes place for almost two weeks during June each year, and includes various cultural events like dance performances, concerts and many more. The celebrations close with the sinking of the Ottoman Empire flag outside the harbour of the island accompanied by fireworks.
The Kountouriotika Festival, also taking place in Hydra, commemorates another Greek admiral and naval hero during the Balkan wars, Pavlos Kountouriotis, and takes place around the 22th of August each year, the anniversary of his death. Countless events including film projections, talks, tours, exhibitions and many more take place during the festival.
The wider area of Porto Heli offers several organized coasts but also private beaches and secluded coves. Here, we have selected the top 5 you should definitely visit during your stay.
Chryssi Akti: a tranquil, unorganized coast at the area of Agios Emilianos, only 4km from Porto Heli, this is a sandy coast with clean waters and lots of natural shade as the trees reach the shoreline.
Costa: one of the most popular coasts of the area, Costa is the beach of the homonymous village with a sandy coast, crystal-clear, calm waters and many beach facilities.
Kiparissia: another amazing coast with whitish pebbles, transparent, turquoise waters and a tranquil ambience. The cypress trees along the coast create a magical scenery, apart from providing lots of natural shade.
Korakia: a totally tranquil and secluded coast located near the homonymous Korakia islets, only accessible by sea or a rough dirt road. Due to its difficult access the coast is calm, uncrowded and untouched.
Limanakia: it comprises two adjacent bays, one with a pebbled coast and sandy seabed and, the other, with golden sand and deep waters. Watersports lovers will love this place as it offers dozens of options.
Although the perfect place to relax and unwind in lush nature, when vacationing in Porto Heli there are still a lot of activities and things to do in order to get a taste of the areaās offerings and get to know its hidden treasures. Wine tasting in some of the areaās wineries as well as honey tasting are among the must-do when visiting.
For those who want to explore the nearby areas, we definitely suggest guided tours to Epidavros, where you will discover the ancient theatre and learn all about the legacy it carries, as well as unwind in an area of pristine natural beauty. A guided tour to Nafplion is also a must as this was the first capital of Greece but has managed to preserve its traditional character and authenticity with its stone-paved narrow alleys in which you will admire the colourful balconies with bougainvilleas, countless flowers and plants and several small cafes and tavernas to enjoy a meal or coffee. And of course, climb up the Palamidi Castle overlooking the entire bay!
A boat trip to Spetses is another must, as the island boasts an authentic beauty, untouched by time, aristocratic architecture and traditional courtyards; plus here cars are prohibited!
Finally, adrenaline lovers can opt for a canoe/kayak tour to explore the exquisite channels and hidden bays of Porto Heli, typical of the area, or practise countless watersports offered in some of the areaās coasts.
