The Ultimate Aegina Island Travel Guide

Lively, Traditional, Stunning

Aegina

Aegina Saronic Gulf

The Destination

The largest of the Saronic Islands, Aegina is a favourite destination for Athenians as it is only 40’ by boat from the Greek capital. Its diversified beauty, traditional villages, verdant plains and important archaeological sites make this charming island a must-visit when in Athens.
Aegina’s homonymous capital is a lively, graphic settlement found at the port of the island; numerous fish taverns, cafeterias and paved alleys with commercial shops and outlets offering unique, mouthwatering traditional products adorn this picturesque village.
This is the first thing one sees as the boat approaches to the island is the beautiful setting of the Chora: a vibrant port with traditional fish boats, yachts and catamarans and the lively promenade in the backdrop.

Highlights

Temple of Aphaia
One of the marvels of antiquity, the Temple of Aphaia is a 5th century BC Doric temple and one of the oldest in Greece. Majestically built in a pine-drenched hill that overlook the Saronic Gulf, the temple is believed to have been dedicated to Aphaia, one of Zeus daughters.

Paleochora
Meaning “Old Town”, Paleochora is a settlement of 9th century AD which was originally the capital of the island. A Byzantine village dotted with the remains of the buildings, the area features more than 30 churches that have been preserved today, all connected with stone paths or Kalderimia.

Camera Obscura
A 7m-high cylindrical structure with 12 small openings, this is the first real-life camera obscura in Greece and the only one with 360° panorama in the world. As the light enters the building, 12 separate upside down and reversed images are produced forming a 360° panoramic view of the outside world.

Tower Of Markellos
A fine sample of traditional architecture with a distinctive pinkish colour, the Tower of Markellos served as the headquarters of Kapodistrias’ government after the liberation from the Turks. Nowadays the tower is mostly open when an art event takes place and houses the Kapodistrian Cultural Center and Alexiou Centre for Social Issues.

Ideal for either a short break or longer vacation, the island of Aegina offers a vast array of activities and monumental sites. Its beautiful fishing villages, like Perdika, offer a calm and relaxing ambience for a fish or seafood meal and an afternoon coffee; the cosmopolitan Agia Marina with its popular sandy beach is the place to be for summer fun; the homonymous capital, Aegina, is perfect for a port promenade stroll and an evening drink in one of its cozy bars in the stone-paved alleys.

Numerous ancient, cultural and religious sites overwhelm visitors of all types: the imposing church of Agios Nektarios, the archaeological site of Kolona next to Chora, the 17th-century Monastery of Hrysoleontissa, the oldest temple in Europe: the Temple of Ellanios Zeus, the Folklore and Christos Kapralos’ Museum…and the list goes on but one thing is for sure; there is always something to see or do in Aegina.

Aegina’s top local product is the homonymous fistiki (peanut), cultivated in numerous spots around the island but also in the yards of the houses. A delicious type of peanut celebrated yearly in September at the dedicated “Aegina Fistiki Festival” where visitors will find out everything about this scrumptious snack and will also enjoy local food, dance and art performances.
