Ideal for either a short break or longer vacation, the island of Aegina offers a vast array of activities and monumental sites. Its beautiful fishing villages, like Perdika, offer a calm and relaxing ambience for a fish or seafood meal and an afternoon coffee; the cosmopolitan Agia Marina with its popular sandy beach is the place to be for summer fun; the homonymous capital, Aegina, is perfect for a port promenade stroll and an evening drink in one of its cozy bars in the stone-paved alleys.
Numerous ancient, cultural and religious sites overwhelm visitors of all types: the imposing church of Agios Nektarios, the archaeological site of Kolona next to Chora, the 17th-century Monastery of Hrysoleontissa, the oldest temple in Europe: the Temple of Ellanios Zeus, the Folklore and Christos Kapralos’ Museum…and the list goes on but one thing is for sure; there is always something to see or do in Aegina.
Aegina’s top local product is the homonymous fistiki (peanut), cultivated in numerous spots around the island but also in the yards of the houses. A delicious type of peanut celebrated yearly in September at the dedicated “Aegina Fistiki Festival” where visitors will find out everything about this scrumptious snack and will also enjoy local food, dance and art performances.
