The Ultimate Chalkidiki Region Travel Guide

The crown stone of Northern Greece that bedazzles travellers

Chalkidiki

Chalkidiki

The Destination

The peninsula of Chalkidiki is found on the northern part of Greece and very close to Thessaloniki. A blessed land with century-deep history and striking natural beauty, Chalkidiki has been inhabited since 4000BC and is the protagonist of many popular parts of the Greek mythology. It is there where the supposed “Titanomahia” (battle of the titans) took place and where the giant Enceladus was supposedly buried (Kassandra).

The three outlets of the peninsula that plunge into the Northern Aegean Sea each carry its own distinctive heritage and spectacular natural beauty. The most exquisite part of Chalkidiki is the third outlet, the Holy Mountain or Mount Athos, which is the epicentre of the orthodox pilgrimage in Greece and a place of striking natural beauty.

Chalkidiki is a holiday oasis as it offers diversified vacationing options for each and every taste and need: family holidays, culinary journeys, sports & adventure expeditions, romantic breaks, spa & wellness experiences, partying options and many more.

Highlights

Afytos Village

Afytos village is one of the most exquisite traditional villages of Chalkidiki located at the Kassandra peninsula and only 73km from Thessaloniki. Its paved narrow alleys, its numerous sandy coasts with utterly warm waters, its panoramic views to the sea are just a few of the resort’s highlights. The buildings here have been built with natural stone composed by the area’s sand while seashells taken from its shores adorn various constructions and sculptures of local artists. Afytos is perfect for a full day excursion and a true a piece of art!

Cave of Petralona

The Cave of Petralona is part for an extensive underground cave system, one of the most important ones in the entire country and the most important paleontological discovery of all times due to the countless fossils of large prehistoric animals found. It is here where the earliest human finding in Europe was discovered: a skull of a woman’s head 700K years’ old. Another marvel of Petralona is the named “Hall of Roots” where the roots of the trees have pierced the cave’s roof and have formed a wooden net on the ceiling.

Blue flag awarded beaches

Chalkidiki boasts a coastline of 550km, thus offering an exceptional array of beaches and coves for sea lovers. Blessed by the hand of nature, the majority of its coasts feature exotic white sand, warm shallow waters of tropical green and light blue hues and a lush verdant embrace made of pine trees and local flora. Apart from the coasts the area also boasts a great number of small islands and islets, mostly uninhabited but featuring stunningly beautiful, unspoilt beaches. And the best part is that almost 90 from its striking beaches are blue flag awarded.

Mount Athos

Mount Athos or the Holy Mountain is one of Chalkidiki’s highlights comprising the epicentre of orthodox pilgrimage. Lush vegetation, stunning landscapes, a great number of stone-built seafront monasteries with heavenly views and a local produce of wine, olive oil and many other culinary products are among the offerings of this spectacular place. Although women are not allowed to visit Mount Athos and its monastic community, visitors can choose to cruise around the peninsula and admire the amazing setting and untouched, pristine beauty of this Unesco World Heritage monument.
