Paxos seems to have jumped out of a fairytale. Gaios is the spectacularly beautiful capital and port of the island. Its neoclassical houses, tinted in fading pastel shades, are dotted amidst greenery so lush that it seems unreal.
The promenade is filled with sailboats and yachts that rock gently in the water. Sit at one of the cafes with the yachting crowds, visit the old port, the church of Analipsi and the museum, where you can learn about the island’s history. When the sun goes down, head to Laka or Logos to feast on delicious local food and sip cocktails under the stars.
Magazia and Ozias are two charming villages in the west of the island. From Magazia, you can visit Erimitis, Kastanida and Ortholithos. At Ozias you can visit the ruins of the churches Agia Marina and Agios Stefanos and the tiny islets of Mogonisi and Kaltsonisi.
The nearby islet of Antipaxos, a tiny sanctuary of breathtaking natural beauty that boasts one of the country’s best beaches, is perfect for day trips. And, of course, the island’s spectacular, crystal clear, emerald green waters make it ideal for diving and snorkelling.
