The Ultimate Paxos Island Travel Guide

Paradise-on-earth Landscapes

Paxos Ionian Islands

The Destination

A speck of land between sea and sky just off Corfu’s southern tip, the verdant island of Paxos boasts heavenly shores with emerald waters, charming miniature villages and picturesque ports that are impossible not to fall in love with.

The island’s tranquil vibe and paradise-on-earth landscapes attract hordes of yachts and sail-boats that flock to the island’s heavenly shores.

The scenery is mesmerising; lush slopes that roll down to the Ionian, long stretches of white sand, unexplored coves hidden in the greenery, picture-perfect villages nestled along the coastline. In Paxos, man’s presence is weaved into the island’s wilderness creating a place of harmony and relaxation.

The stunning seaside village of Gaios will leave you in awe from the moment you sail into the emerald green waters of the fjord that leads to its port. A traditional village bursting with greenery, Gaios’s natural beauty can only be matched by its tranquil, subtly cosmopolitan vibe.

Just opposite the coast of Paxos lies the tiny islet of Antipaxos, a diminutive paradise with heavenly beaches and waters that are so clear you can see every grain of sand, every shell and every tiny fish at the seabed.

Paxos Music Festival

An exquisite classical music festival, that takes place from late August to early September. The festival includes a series of concerts and workshops that take place at the villages of Gaios, Logos and Laka.

The West Coast

The west coast of Paxos is wild, with steep cliffs and a number of underwater caves. Submarine Papanikolis hid in the cave of Ipapandi during World War II. Spilaio Galazio is a series of three caves, one of which you can visit by boat. Ortholithos is an imposing rock that rises out of the azure waters, hiding a vast underwater cave.

In Details

Paxos seems to have jumped out of a fairytale. Gaios is the spectacularly beautiful capital and port of the island.  Its neoclassical houses, tinted in fading pastel shades, are dotted amidst greenery so lush that it seems unreal.

The promenade is filled with sailboats and yachts that rock gently in the water. Sit at one of the cafes with the yachting crowds, visit the old port, the church of Analipsi and the museum, where you can learn about the island’s history. When the sun goes down, head to Laka or Logos to feast on delicious local food and sip cocktails under the stars.

Magazia and Ozias are two charming villages in the west of the island. From Magazia, you can visit Erimitis, Kastanida and Ortholithos. At Ozias you can visit the ruins of the churches Agia Marina and Agios Stefanos and the tiny islets of Mogonisi and Kaltsonisi.

The nearby islet of Antipaxos, a tiny sanctuary of breathtaking natural beauty that boasts one of the country’s best beaches, is perfect for day trips. And, of course, the island’s spectacular, crystal clear, emerald green waters make it ideal for diving and snorkelling.
